"Get a Clue @Cyber Camp'!

This cyber camp is geared towards children ages 8-12. Each week contains a variety of fun facts and fictions as well as games. Below you will find lessons plans to go with each week that apply to PA Standards, Objectives, Materials needed for cyber camp as well as for a craft idea and key ideas. Please remember these are just suggestions feel free to adjust as you see fit.

 I hope you and your children enjoy your cyber adventure!!

Week One: Detect It!!!

Objectives:

  • Children will be able to follow directions given by teacher

  • Children will be active participants in group discussions

  • Children will come to a better understanding of detectives in literature and everyday life

  • Children will come to a better understanding of the tools and techniques that detectives use to solve crimes

Key Questions:
  • What is a detective?
  • What tools do they use?
  • Are there detectives in books?

Materials: Cyber Camp

  • Computer with Internet Access

  • Book Series (optional)

    • 24/: Science Behind the Scenes: Forensic Files

    • One Book Per Child


Materials: Finger Printing Craft (optional)

  • Washable Stamp Pads, Ink Strips, or Pencil Lead

  • blank 3x5 Index Cards

  • Magnifying Glass

  • Clear Tape

  • cocoa or talcum powder

  • small soft brush

  • wipes

Week Two: Solve It!!!

Objectives:

  • Children will be able to follow directions given by teacher

  • Children will be active participants in group discussions

  • Children will come to a better understanding of the difference between a code and a cipher

  • Children will come to a better understanding of the the techniques used to create and solve codes and ciphers

Key Questions:

  • What is Cryptology?
  • What is the difference between a Code and a Cipher?
  • What are some commonly used ciphers?

Materials: Cyber Camp

  • Computer with Internet Access

  • Book Series (optional)

    • Detective Notebook: Secret Agent Codes by Chris Saski

    • One Book Per Child

Materials: Create Your Own Code Craft (Optional)

  • Stamps of multiple shapes sizes and designs

  • Inkpads of various colors

  • White copier paper

  • Examples of Codes and Ciphers

Week Three: Dig It!!!

Objectives:

  • Children will be able to follow directions given by teacher

  • Children will be active participants in group discussions

  • Children will come to a better understanding of Ancient Egyptian Civilization

  • Children will come to a better understanding of the process in which a Mummification

Key Questions:

  • What is a Mummy and how are they made?
  • What is an Amulet?
  • What do Egyptian symbols mean?

Materials: Cyber Camp

  • Computer with Internet Access

  • Book Series (optional)

    • Mummies and Pyramids by Sam Taplin

    • One Book Per Child

Materials: Create your own Amulet

  • Model Magic by Crayola

    • Red

    • Yellow

    • Blue

    • White

Week Four: Discover It!!!

Objectives:

  • Children will be able to follow directions given by teacher

  • Children will be active participants in group discussions

  • Children will come to a better understanding of Fossils and how they form

  • Children will come to a better understanding of the  Science of Paleontology

Key Questions:

  • What is a Fossil?
  • Who is a Paleontologist?
  • What kinds of dinosaurs are there?

Materials: Cyber Camp

  • Computer with Internet Access

  • Book Series (optional)

    • Jurassic Poop: What Dinosaurs (And Others) Left Behind by Jacob Berkowitz

    • One Book Per Child

Materials: Coffee Ground Fossils

  • Coffee Dough Recipe

    • 1 C. Used Coffee Grounds

    • 1 C. Flour

    • 1/2 C. Water

    • Mix ingredients until a soft moldable dough (Play-Dough)

  • Wax Paper

  • Small Toy dinosaurs, plants, or insects

  • Optional: create fossilized poop

Week Five: Find It!!!

Objectives:

  • Children will be able to follow directions given by teacher

  • Children will be active participants in group discussions

  • Children will come to a better understanding of mysteries in everyday life

  • Children will come acquainted to the legends and myths of Cryptozoology

Key Questions:

  • Mysteries in Art
  • Math Mysteries
  • What is Cryptozoology?

Materials: Cyber Camp

  • Computer with Internet Access

  • Book Series (optional)

    • Strangest of Strange Unsolved Mysteries by Phyllis Raybin Emert

    • One Book Per Child

Materials: Oobleck

  • Oobleck Recipe

    • 1 C. Cornstarch

    • 1 C. Water

    • Green Food Coloring (Optional)

    • Mix ingredients until it is a solid in the bowl and a liquid in your hands

  • Wax Paper
