Introduction

Everyone in town has gathered at the pier. A ship has just come in, and everyone is eager to see what the sailors have brought. Rich people hope for spices or silk, while merchants hope for many different types of goods that can be sold for a tidy profit. Everyone is interested in finding out the news from various parts of the world. Is there a new king? How are the Crusades going? What new inventions and innovations will the ship bring?

In Europe of the 12th and 13th centuries, there was a major change in the rate of new inventions and economic growth. In less than a century there were more inventions developed and applied in Europe than in the previous thousand years. This period saw major technological advances as well as great advances in the arts and sciences.
