Introduction

Castles! Who hasn't dreamed of living in a castle? Large and beautiful, castles were often perceived as dusty, drafty, dirty, and cold.  (they were not, though!)

You are medieval castle builder living in England, and Duke Gregory has hired your to build him a new castle. His town has approximately 400 serfs, 200 soldiers, 30 household servants, and 15 family members. Duke Gregory wants a castle that is not only beautiful, but will be the strongest, most well built castle of all time. Will you accept the challenge?

Your Mission

Use the selected resources to research medieval castles. Use the information that you find to create something that will allow you so share your knowledge with the group.

Things to Think About

What are the major parts of a castle?

How did castles develop and how were they built? What were they made out of?

What was every day life like in a castle?

Who will live in the castle? Make sure there is room for all of the serfs in case of siege!

What types of animals will live in the castle with you? Where will they live?

How will the castle be defended? What prevents intruders from getting in?

How long did a typical siege last? How much food will you need to survive? Should you include space for gardens and food storage?
